Salted snacks contain considerable levels of sodium originating mostly from the topping salt.

Reduction of the salt level in most cases reduces the consumer acceptance and flavour stability.

The salty taste is the predominant sensory note and unsalted snacks can be perceived as bland to bitter.

Replacement of normal salt by SOLO® low sodium sea salt can effectively reduce the sodium level while preserving saltiness and consumer acceptance.


The function of salt is primarily taste and flavour improvement or enhancement.

SOLO® is more hygroscopic than ordinary salt and, when applied to salt coated snacks (e.g. peanuts, cashews, crisps etc.) it is possible to reduce the dosage by up to 25% resulting in as much as 75% less sodium in the final product.
